Ukraine Joining NATO Will Lead to World War 3: Russian Official

Russian Security Council official Alexander Venediktov said on Thursday that if Ukraine joins the US-led NATO military alliance, the Ukraine conflict will escalate to World War 3.

On September 30, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, announced a bid to join the NATO alliance in response to the Kremlin’s annexation of four regions in Ukraine. Zelenskyy wanted a fast-track process, but NATO hasn’t considered Ukraine’s bid as its 30 members would have to give their consent.

Venediktov said, “Kyiv is well aware that such a step would mean a guaranteed escalation to World War 3,” and “NATO members understand the suicidal nature of such a step,” he added.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly voiced against NATO’s expansion to the east. He warned the West that he would be ready to use nuclear weapons to defend Russia at any cost if they try to interfere. Russia and the United States are the biggest nuclear powers and control about 90% of the world’s nuclear warheads.

According to Venediktov, Zelenskyy’s call for preventive strikes against Russia is dangerous, cautioning that nuclear war would have catastrophic consequences for the world.
