Tsai Ing-Wen Announced To Resign As DPP Chairman

According to media report on Nov 26th, Taiwan president Tsai Ing-wen decided to resign as the chairman of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) on the evening of the 26th due to its poor performance in the recently concluded nine-in-one local elections.

On the polling day, the counting begun after the voting between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. and the election results came out that night, with Kuomintang winning in 13 of 21 counties and cities in Taiwan including Taipei, New Taipei, Keelung, Taoyuan, Central, Eastern and Lianjiang. In contrast, DPP suffered a significant setback and only won in 5 counties and cities, namely Kaohsiung, Pingtung, Chiayi County, Tainan City and Penghu County.

At the subsequent press conference on the 2022 local elections, president Tsai said she had to take all responsibilities for the less-than-expected election results and consequently resigned as DPP chairman with immediate effect. Su Tseng-chang, president of Executive Yuan, also submitted his resignation to Tsai Ing-wen, who said she has already sought to retain Su with the hope that he could stay and continue to struggle.
