Ukraine Forced to Use Standby Generators to Run Nuclear Plant Under Russian Shelling

As a result of Russian shelling that damaged the transmission cables and forced the facility to rely on diesel generators, Ukraine claims that its Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant has been cut off from the grid.

Energoatom, a state-owned nuclear energy company in Ukraine, reported on Thursday that the two remaining high-voltage transmission lines that connect to the nuclear power plant and Ukraine’s power system were destroyed after a new wave of Russian attacks. According to the company, the facility has enough fuel to run the 20 starting diesel generators for 15 days, and two of the units are being put into cold shutdown mode.

Energoatom declared that “the countdown has begun” and urged Russian forces to leave the adjacent city of Enerhodar and hand back control of the plant to Ukraine for the benefit of global security
