Google’s Parent Company Alphabet Lays Off 12,000 Employees

According to reports, Google’s parent company Alphabet’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, announced on January 20th, via an internal email to notify affected employees, that the Company would cut 12,000 jobs, which is a 6% reduction in the total workforce.

The layoffs at Alphabet will be worldwide and involves various departments, including planning, engineering, and product teams. It makes Alphabet the latest Silicon Valley tech giant to announce large-scale layoffs, following Microsoft’s announcement of 10,000 job cuts. The Company is coping with the current gloomy economic outlook.

Pichai mentioned in a memo to employees that the Company has rapidly expanded its workforce in recent years, but the economic situation is a different reality today. Pichai also said he takes “full responsibility” for the decisions that led them to this moment. Furthermore, layoffs may take longer in other countries and regions due to varying labor laws.

In recent months, several technology companies have announced layoffs, including Facebook’s parent company Meta, Twitter, Amazon, and Microsoft, in response to the global economic downturn and inflation.
