Fmr Ambassador To U.S. Qin Gang Appointed China’s Foreign Minister

The Standing Committee of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) National People’s Congress (NPC) held its 38th meeting on Dec. 30, according to China State-owned media CCTV. The meeting decided to appoint the former Ambassador to the U.S. Qin Gang as Foreign Minister after his predecessor Wang Yi stepped down.

Qin Gang, now 56 years old, entered the CCP’s Central Committee of the 20th National Congress, which was quite surprising since he became the first diplomat to be promoted directly from the ambassadorship to the Central Committee since the end of the Mao Zedong era.

Earlier, Qin was widely believed to be the successor of Wang Yi, but now he has been put into his post ahead of schedule, breaking away from the practice of the Chinese Communist Party in recent years.
Analysts highlight that Xi Jinping’s appointing Qin Gang as foreign minister underscores Xi’s extraordinary trust in Qin and also shows that Xi has no one else to appoint in his administration.
