German Defense Minister’s First Visit To Ukraine Since Russia-Ukraine War

On Oct. 1, German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht made an unannounced visit to Ukraine. It was her first visit since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24 of this year.

According to a statement from the Federal Ministry of Defense (Germany), Lambrecht visited Odessa, a port city of southern Ukraine, and met with Ukrainian Defense Minister Reznikov. Lambrecht believed that air-defense weapons and artillery are now most needed in Ukraine, as she witnessed how the Ukrainian people suffered by Russian drones. Germany will continue to discuss with its allies regarding Ukraine’s request for providing Leopard tanks from Germany.

In response to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s illegal declaration of annexation of four Ukrainian regions on September 30, German government spokesman Hebestreit said that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz informed Ukrainian President Zelensky in a phone call on September 28, that Germany would never recognize the results of the false referendum in these four regions.
