4 Afghan Children Were Killed While Playing with Unexploded Ordnance at School

Police and a doctor said unexploded ordnance detonated in southern Afghanistan killing four children and injuring three others after the kids brought it inside their school on Saturday.

According to a statement from the provincial police chief’s office, the incident in Helmand province occurred when children found an unexploded shell and brought it inside their religious school to play with it.

According to a police statement, the children killed were between the ages of 7 and 14, and at least three others were injured.

Afghanistan has suffered from decades of war and remains a very dangerous place for children, who often collect scrap metal to sell to support their families. Many have been killed or maimed when they encountered unexploded ordnance.

Three children were killed immediately in Saturday’s blast, and a girl later died of her injuries at a hospital in the provincial capital, Lashkar Gah, according to a doctor there. The doctor did not want to be named because he was not allowed to speak to the media.
