Japan Invites South Korea to Fleet Review

It was reported on August 23rd that Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno said at a press conference that Japan had invited South Korea to participate in the Maritime Self-Defense Force ship viewing in November. This Fleet Review ceremony is to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. Chief Matsuno said that he invited all member states of the Western Pacific Naval Seminar, excluding Russia, to the event.

In consideration of the Japan-South Korea relations and other reasons, the South Korean military was not invited to participate in the Fleet review Ceremony in 2019. At that time, and the Ceremony was cancelled due to the influence of the typhoon. This may be due to the conflict of the patrol aircraft of the Self-Defense Forces and the issue of forced requisition that occurred in December 2018.

Regarding the question of whether it is appropriate to invite South Korea when these issues have not been resolved, Chief Matsuno said that a comprehensive judgment on the invitation was made under consideration of the current situation of Japan-South Korea relations.
