Indiana Governor Arrives in Taiwan with Delegation

It is reported on August 21st, despite the pressure from the Chinese Communist Party(CCP), the Indiana governor led a delegation to Taipei on Sunday.

Since House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan earlier this month, a bipartisan U.S. congressional delegation also visited last week. The delegation reaffirmed U.S. support for Taiwan and encouraged stability and peace across the Taiwan Strait. The CCP has continued to claim democratically-governed Taiwan as its territory and has been conducting military drills around Taiwan.

On the same day, Governor Eric Holcomb tweeted that he will also visit South Korea and will work to build new relationships and strengthen partnerships with Taiwan and South Korea in key sectors.

Holcomb said he was the first U.S. governor to visit Taiwan since the outbreak of the CCP virus (COVID-19) pandemic, and he will meet with President Tsai Ing-wen on Monday morning. The CCP did not immediately respond to his arrival.

Taiwan’s Department of Foreign Affairs stated that Holcomb would also meet with Taiwanese semiconductor companies, without providing details, and that it would sign various MOUs on trade and technology.

Taiwan is home to the world’s biggest chip manufacturer, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (TSMC), which is building a $12 billion factory in the US state of Arizona.

It is also reported that the leader of a Japanese parliamentary group visited Taiwan on August 22, while a delegation of Canadian lawmakers is also planning a visit in October.

China’s military drills have been continuing around Taiwan on a smaller scale than those conducted immediately after Pelosi’s visit.
