Taiwan Said It Had Not Been Informed Of “Chip 4” Meeting

A media outlet in Taiwan said on Friday that Taiwan had not been informed of the so-called “Chip 4” meeting. The meeting included Taiwan, the United States, South Korea, and Japan, but added that the United States has been working closely with Taiwan on the supply chain.

South Korean Foreign Minister Park Jin said this week that Seoul is expected to participate in a preliminary meeting of the four chip-making nations, describing the meeting as U.S.-led. He did not elaborate on what would be discussed.

The meeting will take place amid a global chip crunch that began two years ago. The U.S. passed a new law this month called the Chip Act, which includes $52 billion in subsidies for companies that make chips or conduct chip research in the U.S.

The time, location and other details of the Chip 4 meeting have yet to be determined, said a South Korean official who was not authorized to speak to the media and declined to be named.

Taiwan’s economic ministry said in a statement to a foreign media outlet late Thursday that it had no relevant information.

Brief comment: U.S. President Joe Biden signed the Chips Act and offered huge subsidies. The Act is aimed at fighting against Communist China. The upcoming meeting of the U.S.-led chip four countries has completely ignored Communist China. The future chip powers are the United States, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. Taiwan has not yet received an invitation, and the specific time and place of the meeting have not been finalized.
