G7 Foreign Minister’s Call for Peaceful Resolution

According to a report on August 4th, after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit in Taiwan, Foreign Minister Melanie Jolly of the Trudeau government and other G7 countries called on the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to de-escalate tensions with Taiwan.

The report said that the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) had taken an aggressive stance against Taiwan in response to Pelosi’s visit. The foreign ministers of all G7 countries urged the CCP not to use the visit as an excuse to conduct military activities in the Taiwan strait.

The PLA had reportedly sent in 27 fighter jets in Taiwan’s Air Defence Identification Zone and conducted unprecedented live-fire drills that effectively blockaded the island of Taiwan just hours after the Pelosi’s departure.

The G7 ministers in the statement mentioned that they will adhere to the One-China policy, but pressured PLA not to unilaterally change the status quo by force in the region, and to resolve cross-strait differences by peaceful means.

Canada’s Conservative Party candidate praised Pelosi’s trip to Taiwan and was disappointed that the ruling establishment of Canada did not stand up for Taiwan.
