Former U.S. and Australian Defense Ministers Call for Alliance to Stop CCP Attack on Taiwan

On July 26 local time, in the Ketagalan Forum – 2022 Indo-Pacific Security Dialogue held in Taiwan, former defense ministers from the U.S. and Australia both said that the West must form an alliance to hinder the Chinese Communist Party – CCP’s attempt to invade Taiwan.

During the dialogue, the U.S. side analyzed the challenges posed by the so-called “unlimited cooperation” between the CCP and Russia, cited the opinion of Japanese prime minister and emphasized that the situation faced by Ukraine is very likely to occur in East Asia in the future, hence the Sino-Russian cooperation should be closely watched. It also pointed out that the Russia-Ukraine war would have influence on when and how Xi attacks Taiwan. Therefore, in face of the situation of Russia – CCP cooperation, the West must build a strong and united alliance and make a strong voice of respecting the sovereignty to prevent CCP from invading Taiwan.

Former Australian defense minister also stressed the imperative of being united, and endorsed the late former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s advocation of changing the strategic ambiguity because Taiwan stands at the forefront in fighting against the CCP. He said any attempt to invade Taiwan must be encountered by a military strike back of the allies. He sees the need to strengthen allies’ cooperation in numerous areas such as gathering and sharing intelligence, and conducting military exercises etc. The CCP fears the most of disintegrating like former Soviet Union, so the outside world should never underestimate the will and spirit of the people and believe that democracy will eventually triumph.
