Global Tech Industry Laid Off More Than 57,000 Workers in Early 2023

According to an analytic report, more than 57,000 staff have been laid off in the global tech industry in the first weeks of 2023. The overall number of layoffs by global tech companies this week has more than doubled in comparison to last week’s recorded 25,000, with 200 tech companies announcing 59,448 layoffs in the first few weeks of this year. It is predicted that the number of global tech layoffs in 2023 will exceed that of 2022. In 2022, a total of 1024 tech companies announced 154,336 layoffs throughout the year. Major tech companies in the US are under the spotlight for the topic of layoffs; last week, Google’s parent company Alphabet confirmed plans to cut about 12,000 staff worldwide; meanwhile, Intel has confirmed plans to lay off about 10,000 staff. On January 25th, two more American tech giants revealed their plan for unemploying staff, including IBM announcing 3,900 layoffs, while Lam Research announced dismissals for 1,300 of their workers. The public is concerned that a global recession is seemingly inevitable.
