U.S. FCC Commissioner Visits Taiwan

On Nov 2nd, commissioner of the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Brendan Carr arrived in Taipei for a three-day official visit. Carr is one of the five incumbent commissioners in FCC and also the first incumbent commissioner who visited Taiwan in official capacity.

The same day, Carr held a meeting with officials of Taiwanese National Communications Commission, in which they exchanged views on telecommunication business, cybersecurity, spectrum management, satellite communication, data management and other issues of mutual interest and shared experience in communications regulations. He would also meet with Taiwanese telecommunication enterprises and understand the development status of Taipei’s entire 5G industry.

On Nov 3rd, Carr together with the representatives of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) met with the minister of digital affairs and they discussed the resilience of digital networks, communication security, supply chain safety and other issues of concern to both countries. They also reached a preliminary agreement on deepening cooperation between Washington and Taipei in communication regulation, cybersecurity and other issues that are critical in common interests of both sides.

Carr said a free and democratic Taiwan was vital to the prosperity of the US and he called on Washington to ally with Taipei to confront Communist China. Before his departure for Taiwan, Carr also recommended the US government to ban the use of CCP’s social media application TikTok.
