Biden Calls British PM Truss Discussing Challenges of Communist China

On September 6th, U.S. President Joe Biden called new British Prime Minister Liz Truss. Both parties expressed their readiness to further deepen the U.K.-U.S. relationship to meet future global challenges.

Biden reaffirmed the special relationship between the U.K. and the U.S. and expressed his commitment to work closely on global challenges. Both leaders discussed the ongoing Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, challenges from Communist China and preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. In addition, they discussed global energy sustainability and other issues.

It was also reported that Truss had promised hawks in the British Parliament during his campaign that she will declare that the Chinese communist regime has committed genocide against Uighurs in Xinjiang, bringing the UK’s position on Xinjiang in line with that of the U.S. She is prepared to upgrade Communist China’s positioning from its current “systemic competitor” to a “threat” to national security as Russia.

According to Powell, a researcher at the Atlantic Council, a U.S. think tank, Truss is likely to crack down on Chinese firms like TikTok after she takes office, and relations between the U.K. and Communist China will not improve with the new prime minister.
