Canada: Lawmaker’s Taiwan Visit Is Not Excuse For CCP’s Aggression

Adrien Blanchard, spokesperson for Foreign Minister of Canada Melanie Joly said on August 24 that Communist China should not use Canadian lawmakers’ planned trip to Taiwan as an excuse for military or economic invasion. The Canadian government respects the parliamentary associations’ and friendship groups’ independent decisions to travel to Taipei.

Last week, a Member of Canadian Parliament Judy Sgro said members of a Canada- Taiwan “friendship group” of parliament planned to visit the self-governing island in October. The trip would focus on trade and did not intend to disrupt Taiwan or to create problems with mainland China.Last week, a Member of Canadian Parliament Judy Sgro said members of a Canada- Taiwan “friendship group” of parliament planned to visit the self-governing island in October. The Communist China has opposed foreign politicians to visit Taiwan and claimed the island as its territory under the “One China Principle”. The Chinese embassy in Canada said in a statement released late on Tuesday that “China will take resolute and forceful measures against any country that attempts to interfere with or infringe upon China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”

Canada, like many other western countries, pursues a one-China policy that it diplomatically recognizing Beijing, not Taipei, but it unofficially supports Taiwan.
