Communist China Threatens to Counterattack Regarding Pelosi’s Visit to Taiwan

It was reported on July 30, 2022, that the Global Times, a Communist China’s government media, issued a strong warning on Friday regarding U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan during her trip to Asia.

For decades, there has been tension between the U.S. and Communist China on the Taiwan issue. Communist China claims that Taiwan is part of its territory under the “one country, two systems” model. However, this island country has been operating autonomously for decades and has its own vibrant democratic system, rather than the authoritarian one-party system of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

The Global Times published an article on July 29, stating that U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has planted a landmine around the intersection of U.S.-China relations and the Taiwan Strait. It warned in the article, “one thing is certain that Communist China will take tough measures to respond and counteract firmly. We can also designate a missile test area for ballistic testing if needed. During sensitive periods, the PLA will monitor Pelosi’s aircraft in a timely manner. If it is detected flying into our airspace, PLA fighter jets will warn, track, intercept, electronically jam, force a landing, or drive it back. In this process, any consequences may occur, and the responsibility lies entirely with the U.S.”According to the CCP media, the CCP leader Xi Jinping also issued a warning to President Joe Biden about Taiwan via telephone on Thursday. Xi said, “the will of the Chinese people cannot be violated and playing with fire will burn itself. I hope the U.S. side can see this.”

Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan received bipartisan support. Her hard-line stance against the authoritarianism of Communist China has received both Demcratic and Republican member support in Congress.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said on Tuesday, “If she doesn’t go now, she will hand over a certain victory to Communist China.” House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said that Pelosi should visit the island nation, adding that he would be happy to do so as speaker. McCarthy is optimistic that the Republican Party will regain control of the House of Representatives in the upcoming November mid-term elections, which may prompt him to become speaker.
