China Steps Up Warning to U.S. Over Pelosi’s Possible Taiwan Visit

According to a report on July 25th, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has issued a stern private warning to the Biden administration about a possible visit to Taiwan by U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi in August, with words indicating a military response. The level of private warnings is significantly stronger than previous threats issued when dissatisfied with U.S. actions or policy on Taiwan.

Last Monday the media reported that Pelosi was planning to visit Taiwan in August. CCP’s Foreign Ministry the next day said that her visit to Taiwan would seriously undermine the sovereignty and territorial integrity of China, and the United States would bear the consequences. On Wednesday, President Joe Biden said he plans to speak with CCP’s leader Xi Jinping by the end of July. He appeared skeptical of Pelosi’s planned trip to Taiwan, saying the military didn’t think it was a good idea to visit Taiwan now.

The White House National Security Council and the State Department declined to comment on the report, and CCP’s Foreign Ministry did not immediately respond to any request for comment.
