U.S. Pushes to Confront China in Pacific Island Countries

United States Vice President Kamala Harris will participate in the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting on Tuesday, Reuters Washington reported on July 12. Washington is stepping up its efforts to counter China in the region with new measures, including opening new U.S. embassies in Kiribati and Tonga, the appointment of the first U.S. Pacific Islands Forum envoy, and the return of the Peace Corps to the region. Additionally, Washington will establish a U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) regional mission in Fiji and announce a new request to Congress to provide Fiji economic assistance nearly triple the current level

 The Biden administration has vowed to invest more resources in the Indo-Pacific region as China seeks to strengthen economic, military, and police ties with Pacific island nations that are thirsty for foreign investment. A security pact negotiated this year with the Solomon Islands highlighted Beijing’s growing influence had alarmed Australia, New Zealand, and the United States.
