Bulgaria expels 70 Russian diplomats

On June 28, Bulgaria issued an expulsion order against 70 Russian diplomats on the grounds of espionage. Bulgarian Foreign Ministry released a statement saying that Deputy Foreign Minister Irena Dimitrova summoned Russian Ambassador Eleonora Mitrofanova on the same day and informed her of the expulsion order.

The statement said the Russian diplomats were engaged in activities that were contrary to Bulgarian interests and must leave Bulgaria on an arranged plane by July 3. The statement also said Bulgaria would temporarily close its consulate in the Russian city of Ekaterinburg. According to reports, this is the largest expulsion in Bulgaria ever. The Bulgarian Foreign Ministry has stated that another purpose of the expulsion is to reduce the size of the Moscow delegation to a scale comparable to the Bulgarian representative office in Moscow.
