Russia warns of deployment of nuclear weapons when Finland and Sweden consider NATO membership

According to Reuters on Apr 14th, Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council warned that should Sweden and Finland join NATO, Russia would have to strengthen its defensive forces in the Baltic Sea, including deployment of nuclear weapons and hypersonic missiles.

Russia’s neighbour Lithuania said Russia’s threats were nothing new and Moscow had deployed nuclear weapons to Kaliningrad exclave bordering Lithuania long before the war in Ukraine.

Finland and Sweden were considering accession into the NATO alliance. On Apr 13th, Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin said Finland would decide in the next few weeks while Sweden has also discussed membership.

On Apr 14th, CIA director Willian Burns warned that Putin could resort to using low-yield tactical nuclear weapons in Ukraine given the setbacks Russia has faced so far.
