On April 13, according to internet statistics, during the week of lockdown in Shanghai from March 28 to April 3, keyword searches by mainland China internet users inquiring about immigration increased a hundredfold, with the three most popular destination countries, Canada, the United States, and Australia, topping the list. Immigration agents also confirmed that there has been a sharp increase in recent inquiries from Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou, because of dissatisfaction with the CCP’s virus prevention measures, which caused 25 million Shanghai residents to starvation in the matter of days.
However, regulations to tighten Chinese traveling abroad, as well as immigration, have come into place since Xi Jinping came to power in 2012. Almost all civil servants and staff of state-owned institutions and enterprises have been required to turn in their passports and kept by their authorities. Personal travel has also been tightly leashed.
