Belgian PM Pays Tribute to Slain Belgian Journalist Huwé

During his visit to the Romanian capital, Bucharest, on April 12, Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo laid a wreath at the memorial for the slain Belgian journalist Danny Huwé.
Danny Huwé was one of the two journalists who were killed in Budapest, Hungary while covering the Romanian revolution back in December 1989. A square in Budapest was renamed after Danny Huwé Square in his honor. Up to this date, he remains the only Belgian journalist killed in a conflict zone.Taking place in Romania in December 1989, as a part of the Revolutions that occurred in several countries around the world, the Romanian Revolution ultimately culminated in the show trial and execution of longtime Romanian Communist Party (PCR) General Secretary, the notorious dictator–Nicolae Ceausescu and his wife Elena, and the end of 42 years of the Communist rule in Romania.
Unfortunately, the monument built to honor Mr. Huwé has now been destroyed. Even though the martyr’s name has been erased from the monument, it serves as a greater reminder that freedom is never free and that free media and true journalists still face many dangers and sacrifices every day.Since the Russia-Ukraine war erupted, 7 journalists and media workers have been killed in Ukraine. Prime Minister De Croo expressed that Danny Huwé’s death is a reminder to always fight for freedom of the press. Because if the Russians knew the real story in Ukraine, the world would look completely different.
