Blasts At Engels Air Base In Russia

Ukrainian and Russian media reported on December 26th that explosions were heard at Russia’s Engels airbase, hundreds of kilometers from the Ukrainian frontline.

Ukrainian news agencies reported two explosions at the base. Russian news media, citing local residents, said that air raid sirens were wailing and an explosion was heard. There was no immediate official confirmation of the explosions.

The air base near the city of Saratov, about 730 kilometers (450 miles) southeast of Moscow, was hit on December 5th. Russia says Ukrainian drones attacked two Russian air bases that day. Ukraine has never publicly claimed responsibility for the attacks in Russia, but has said such incidents are karma for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Analysts said the two attacks dealt a major “reputation blow” to Russian authorities and raised questions about why its defense failed at the air base.
