Guatemala’s Foreign Minister Says Will Always Support Taiwan

It was reported on August 30th, Guatemala’s Foreign Minister Mario Bucaro said on Tuesday that his country will “always support” Taiwan, despite Communist China’s threats against its large-scale military drills.

During Bucaro’s visit with the Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen at the Presidential Office in Taipei, he said that through a “democratic alliance,” Guatemala and Taiwan were joined as “like-minded nations.”

“Guatemala will always support Taiwan because we have a firm belief in the principles of peace, sovereignty and territorial integrity.” He added, “Peace is non-negotiable, but especially sovereignty is non-negotiable.” said Bucaro.

In early August, US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan. Since then, multiple attempts of military drills were conducted around Taiwan by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). The CCP considers democratic Taiwan as one of its provinces, to which the Taiwanese government has expressed strong objection.

President Tsai said in her speech that Taiwan was the first “Asian country” Bucaro visited since he became Guatemala’s foreign minister. Tsai expressed gratitude to Bucaro for the country’s diplomatic support to Taiwan after China’s military action.

At the moment, only 14 nations, including Guatemala, have formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan. Beside Guatemala, the other two Taiwan’s allies in Central America are Honduras and Belize.
