Biden told Xi that the US Opposes changing Taiwan’s Status Quo

On July 28th, the White House released a statement after President Joe Biden spoke with General Secretary Xi Jinping over the phone. “On Taiwan, President Biden underscored that the United States policy has not changed and that the United States strongly opposes unilateral efforts to change the status quo or undermine peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.”

According to the White House’s statement titled Readout of President Biden’s Call with President Xi Jinping of the People’s Republic of China, two leaders discussed a range of issues important to the bilateral relationship and other regional and global issues and tasked their teams to continue following up on the conversation.

The call is the fifth of the two leaders’ conversation since President Biden took office, and came at the time when Communist China warned against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visiting Taiwan. The tension between the two nations are getting higher over Taiwan, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and recent CCP actions the US views as aggressive in the Indo-Pacific Region.
