Boris Johnson: China (CCP) must abide by its commitments to Hong Kong

London, Reuters, June 30 – British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that the UK will do everything in its power to make Beijing abide by the democratic rights commitments made when Hong Kong was returned to Communist China 25 years ago. Johnson said that China (Chinese Communist Party/CCP) has failed to fulfill its commitment to respect the “One Country, Two Systems” arrangement.

“One Country, Two Systems” was reached by an agreement to end British colonial rule over Hong Kong in 1997. The UK has been critical of the National Security Law and electoral reforms enforced by the Chinese Communist Party in 2020, saying that these reforms have eroded Hong Kong’s freedom and autonomy.

Johnson said in a video post: “On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the return of Hong Kong, we simply cannot avoid the fact that Beijing has been unable to comply with its obligations for some time now. It’s a state of affairs that threatens both the rights and freedoms of Hong Kongers and the continued progress and prosperity of their home.”
