U.S. Military Expected to Demonstrate Latest Space Nuclear Power System by 2027

On May 17, the U.S. Defense Innovation Unit announced two contracts they have awarded to Ultra Safe Nuclear and Avalanche Energy to research and develop “nuclear propulsion and power capabilities for small spacecraft operating in Earth-Moon space.” If all goes well, the U.S. could demonstrate a nuclear power system in space in 2027.

Ultra Safe Nuclear, will demonstrate a rechargeable radioisotope battery called EmberCore for propulsion and power. The radioisotope system has more than 10 times the power of conventional plutonium systems and can provide more than 1 million kilowatt hours of energy from just a few kilograms of fuel. Avalanche Energy, meanwhile, will demonstrate a nuclear power system called Orbitron, which will capture fusion ions in an electrostatic field and, after processing by magnetrons, bring the electrons closer to the nucleus. The resulting fusion fuel, when burned, will produce heat and energetic particles that can be used as system propulsion to provide power. And such a nuclear power system is smaller than even a typical nuclear power system.
