Canada Escalates Sanctions Against Russia

On June 1, Canada announced upgraded sanctions against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine. The sanction added Alina Kabaeva who is widely believed to be the mistress of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The list also includes 21 Russian officials and four financial institutions to a new list of sanctions.

The Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Melanie Joly, said the sanctions are aimed at curbing Putin’s regime, and will involve asset freezes and Canadian entry restrictions to the listed individuals and entities.

Canada has implemented sanctions on over 1050 Russian and Belarusian individuals and entities since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine earlier this year.
