U.S.Senator Will Meet President Tsai Ing-wen

U.S. Senator Duckworth, leading a congressional delegation, arrived in Taiwan for a three-day visit, according to a report on Taiwan media on May 30. She and her delegation will meet President Tsai Ing-wen on the morning of May 31 and exchange views on regional security, economic and trade cooperation, and U.S. Taiwan media relations.

A spokesman for Taiwan Presidential Office said that Senator Duckworth, a member of the “Senate Taiwan Connection,” has long been a constant supporter of Taiwan and has repeatedly promoted Taiwan-related bills in U.S. Senate. Together with Senator John Cornyn, she introduced the Taiwan Partnership Act to encourage U.S. National Guards to partner with the Taiwan army, which passed into legislation in the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2022 (NDAA 2022). This month Senator Duckworth also introduced Strengthen Taiwan’s Security Act of 2022, which proposes specific approaches to strengthen Taiwan’s defense capabilities. She also sent a joint letter with 51 other U.S. senators to President Biden, calling for Taiwan to be included in the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF).

The spokesman said he expects the visit of the prominent U.S. senators to bring Taiwan-U.S. relations to a higher level than where it is now.
