Switzerland Steps Up Criticism Of Human Rights In Xinjiang, Trade With Communist China Blocked

According to Reuters, on 29 May, the progress of the free trade agreement between Switzerland and Communist China has stalled as Bern adopted a more critical position toward Beijing’s human rights issue.

It is reported that Communist China and Switzerland signed a free trade agreement in 2013, Beijing’s first such pact with an economy in continental Europe aimed at contributing to trade growth between the two countries. Swiss efforts to refresh the accord with Communist China have now reached an impasse.

In an interview, the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs said they would become more critical of Communist China’s human rights record. Recently, the Legal Affairs Committee of the National Council passed a Swiss parliamentary initiative condemning the forced labor of the Uyghurs by the CCP government as “a real problem.” Western countries and human rights organizations also accused the CCP of detaining and torturing Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities in Xinjiang concentration camps.
