New Omicron Subvariant More Infectious & May Break Thru Body’s Immunity

On Apr 28, Tulio de Oliveira, who runs the Centre for Epidemic Response and Innovation, said the Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 subvariant discovered in South Africa earlier this month appeared to be more infectious than the previous BA.2 subvariant and capable of evading the body’s defense acquired in a prior infection. There were breakthrough cases reported in 20 countries worldwide.

The new subvariant’s mutation at spike amino acids 452 has been associated with an increased affinity for the binding of the 452 residue and the interaction interface of the hACE2 receptor, thereby facilitating the viral penetration into the cell of the infected.

Many South Africans acquired immunity to the CCP virus via a previous infection. However, the Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 sub-lineages accounted for about 70% of new cases of CCP virus in South Africa, which demonstrated the new subvariants were able to break through the previously acquired immunity. In addition, there was no sudden or sharp rise in the number of hospitalizations, which showed a slowly increasing trend.
