First Case of Omicron XE Confirmed In Japan

According to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare on Apr. 11th, Japan has confirmed its first case of the Omicron XE variant from a lady arriving at Narita airport near Tokyo.

The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare said the woman in her 30s, who had been staying in the U.S. and showing no symptoms, arrived at the airport on Mar 26th. She has received two shots of a vaccine developed by Pfizer BioTech, but she still tested positive for the CCP virus upon arrival.

It was reported that this was the 1st case of the Omicron XE variant recorded in Japan.The strain was said to be a combination of the Omicron sub-variants BA.1 and BA.2, whereas its infection rate was 12.6% higher than the Omicron subvariants BA.2, although details on pathophysiologic features remained unclear as of press time.
