Czech Parliament Speaker Leads Delegation To Taiwan During Taiwan-Honduras Diplomatic Breakdown

On March 25th, Czech Parliament Speaker Marketa Pekarova Adamova led a delegation of more than 160 members, including Czech parliamentarians, interdepartmental officials, representatives from industry, academia, research, and journalists, on a five-day visit to Taiwan. This is the second largest delegation in Czech history and the largest European delegation to visit Taiwan in recent years. The visit coincides with a diplomatic break between Taiwan and Honduras.

On the 27th, Adamova attended a meeting on economic cooperation between Taiwan and the Czech Republic, met with Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen in the afternoon, and paid a courtesy call on Executive Yuan Premier Chen Chien-jen and other officials. President Tsai remarked that Adamova’s visit under great pressure, once again demonstrated the Czech Republic’s strong support for Taiwan. With a good foundation of interaction between the two sides, Tsai believes that various areas of exchange and cooperation can be further strengthened in the future.

In her speech, Adamova said that the visit had two main objectives: first, to express support for Taiwan as a democratic partner and second, to deepen comprehensive cooperation. She believes that both goals must be developed simultaneously. Although Taiwan has just lost a diplomatic ally in Honduras, the political and economic support from the Czech Republic and other EU countries has also greatly encouraged the Taiwanese people.
