Tens of thousands Israelis Protest Against Judicial Reform Plan

According to media reports, tens of thousands of Israelis took to the streets in heavy rain on February 4th for a fifth week of protests against the judicial reform plan by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government. The report noted that the government had earlier argued that legislation was needed to curb overreach by judges, which caused strong opposition from groups, including the Bar Association, and raised concerns among business leaders the government’s move will widen political divisions in Israel. In addition, opponents say if the reform plans succeed, they would threaten judicial appointments or acts of congress, limiting the Supreme Court’s powers to overturn government decisions. A 35-year-old protester told a reporter that the government wants to weaken the judiciary system of Israel and tear up Israel’s democracy. But the Israeli people will continue to fight fearlessly to preserve the country’s democracy.
