U.S. Aids Robot Dogs Assisting Ukraine to Sweep Mines and Unexploded Ordnances

According to a report on June 23rd, the U.S. Army has agreed to provide Ukraine with one of its two robotic dogs “Spot” made by Boston Dynamics to assist with mines clearance, as well as removal of mortar shells and cluster munitions.

The report said that Spot can help drag various forms of unexploded munitions into the pit, then detonate and destroy them in batches of 50 to 100 shells. The advantages of doing this is that it can be done far from civilians, and mitigate the risk of endangering the deminers, etc.

The robot dogs move with four mechanical legs equipped with various sensors on different spots including the joint and the part touching the ground. One dog is approximately 1 meter long, 0.7 meter tall, weighs 75 kilograms, and can march off-road at a speed of 5.3 km / hour with 154 kilograms loaded.

Spot has agile mobility and is mainly used for patrolling and environment detection in dangerous areas. It can patrol following predetermined route, or be controlled remotely, and automatically perform routine inspection and surrounding environments data collection in a safe and precise way.
