New York Police Department Investigates Attack on Asian Americans

On June 15th, the New York City Police Department (NYPD) said they were investigating an attack on Asian Americans.

The NYPD are looking for a woman who allegedly made hate speech about four Asian Americans and attacked them with pepper spray. The NYPD’s Hate Crimes Task Force released a photo and video of the suspect, which has no sound and can be seen holding a pepper sprayer in a ready-to-attack posture. The suspect is a woman in her 50s, about 5 feet 3 inches tall, she wore a colorful dress with a pink scarf and sunglasses. The NYPD released contact information in the hope that the public can help identify the suspect.

The NYPD say hate crimes against Asians are on the rise, with anti-Asian hate crimes up 339 percent last year from the year before. New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles and other cities set new crime records in 2020. One year from March 31, 2021 to March 31, 2022, 110 of the 577 crimes were hate crimes against Asians.
