CCP Has Fettered the Visit of the High Commissioner for Human Rights to Xinjiang

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, visited Communist China from May 23-29, including the city of Guangzhou, Kashgar, and Urumqi. Since the United Nations has never addressed the genocide of the Uyghurs, some human rights groups had warned that Ms. Bachelet’s trip would not make any progress, and the result of her visit has confirmed the warning. She was looking the other way on genocide during her entire visit and concluded her investigation with the CCP’s consistent narrative on the issue.

U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken had also expressed concerns about CCP’s restrictions and manipulation of Bachelet’s trip. Some media outlets pointed out that Bachelet’s visit may have the effect of whitewashing the CCP’s human rights violations in Xinjiang, saying that, on the surface, Bachelet’s approval to visit Xinjiang appears to be a victory for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, yet under closer scrutiny, it is easy to see that the CCP propaganda machine is the real winner.
