The US and New Zealand Express Concern Over Threats from Communist China

On Tuesday, US President Joe Biden and New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern stated in a joint statement that the security agreement between the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and the Solomon Islands will destroy the existing security mechanism and alter the strategic balance in the Indo-Pacific, and they are concerned about the CCP’s military bases in the Pacific. In addition, They support navigation freedom in the South China Sea and other areas under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), oppose illegal maritime assertions and activities, express grave concerns about human rights issues in Xinjiang and violations of legal rights and freedom in Hong Kong, and stress the significance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, encouraging peaceful resolution of cross-strait issues.
Subsequently, the Chinese Foreign Ministry expressed strong opposition to the statement. In an interview on June 2, New Zealand Foreign Minister Nanaia Mahuta, who ignored the CCP’s opposition, claimed that New Zealand would maintain an independent foreign policy.
