194 Nobel Prize Laureates Voice Their Support for Ukraine

On March 10, 194 Nobel Prize laureates jointly issued a statement of solidarity with Ukraine. It calls for peace, opposes war and condemns the invasion of Ukraine by Russia. The statement compares the Russian invasion to the invasion of the Nazi Germany on Poland in 1939 and on the Soviet Union in 1941.

The statement read: “The Russian invasion blatantly violates the United Nations Charter … It ignores the Budapest Memorandum of 1994, which obligated Russia and others to respect the sovereignty, independence, and existing borders of Ukraine … To make war … is an unwarranted, bloody, and unproductive way to a future.

The Russian invasion will stain the international reputation of the Russian state for decades to come.”

The signatories of the statement are all prominent in their respective fields, including the Dalai Lama, and U.S. Presidents Jimmy Carter and Barack Obama. The statement was released by the Nobel Prize organization.
