U.S. Counters Communist China’s Military Expansion in the Region with Taiwan Strait Flights

Taipei Times reported on June 26 that a U.S. Navy P-8A Poseidon aircraft passed through the Taiwan Strait on Friday in an effort to refute China’s claims to the waterway and its “systematic expansion” in the region.

U.S. Indo-Pacific Command said in a statement that the transit demonstrates the American commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific. Operating within the Taiwan Strait in accordance with international law, the United States safeguards the navigational rights and freedoms of all countries.

The Chinese Communist Party has stepped up its military activities near Taiwan over the past few years. Twenty-nine Chinese Communist Party military aircraft entered Taiwan’s air defense identification zone on Tuesday before the U.S. aircraft crossed the border, the third-highest single-day total this year. Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense says it is fully aware of the CCP’s military activities and has contingency measures in place to maintain national security.
