Most Australians See Communist China as a Security Threat

It is reported, that Australians’ anxiety about Russia and Communist China has replaced previous concerns about the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) virus pandemic and climate change, according to an annual poll by the Lowy Institute, an Australian foreign policy think tank. A whopping three-quarters of respondents now see Communist China as a military threat, reflecting a free-fall impression on Communist China, Australians’ biggest trading partner.

The number of people who have a negative impression of Communist China is 29 % higher, compared with the same survey conducted by the Lowy Institute in 2018. Most Australians regarded Communist China as an “economic partner” five years ago, but now it has turned into a “security threat”. It is rare to see such huge difference only in 5 years.

Surprisingly, Kassam, director of the polling program at the Lowy Institute for International Policy, said the new Australian Government found public support for raising the defense budget, a tough policy on Communist China and Russia, and stronger engagement on the region and world stage, which was unthinkable a few years ago.

After Canberra called for a global investigation into the origin of the CCP Virus, Beijing retaliated economically using trade leverages between the two countries, banning import of a series of products such as Australian energy and agriculture. It is extremely rare in history for the CCP to take similar economic retaliatory measures against Western developed countries. So, the relationship trend between the CCP and Australia is deteriorating.

The further tension between the CCP and Australia proves that the CCP not only oppresses domestic people in every possible way, but also begins to spread its authoritarianism as time goes by and with the growth of economic power. It even began to interfere in the formulation of internal policies of Western developed countries. If it continues, it is only a matter of time that the CCP squeezes out the living space of the West.
