Swedish Court Affirmed Ban on Huawei 5G Equipment

On June 22, a Swedish appeals court affirmed the lower court’s decision to ban Huawei equipment. Due to the fact that the company has a Chinese Communist Party (CCP) background, there are national security issues. As a result, the court ruling barred Huawei from selling 5G equipment in the country.

In 2020, Sweden’s telecom regulator banned Huawei from supplying 5G equipment to Swedish mobile companies. The reason is that the Swedish security service has confirmed that the company’s equipment may pose security risks. In this regard, the Swedish mobile company challenged in court.

The decision made by Sweden’s telecom regulator comes after US pointed out that the CCP could use Huawei equipment for espionage. European governments have followed suit, tightening their grip on CCP-built 5G networks. Sweden has now asked its telecommunication companies to remove equipment made by Huawei and ZTE from existing infrastructure and core functions by January 1, 2025.

As a price, Sweden’s feud with Huawei has led to Ericsson facing retaliation in Communist China.

It is reported that the proportion of Ericsson’s revenue from Communist China has dropped from 10-11% to about 3%. As a last resort, the Swedish company has reduced operations in one of its biggest markets.
