Former British Governor Patten’s Concerns about Hong Kong

According to CTV News on June 20th, the last British Governor of Hong Kong, Chris Patten, said that Beijing’s crackdown on civil liberties in Hong Kong has been a lot worse than expected.

Before Hong Kong’s return to Communist China on July 1, 1997, Chris Patten said it was heartbreaking to see the transformation of Hong Kong, according to reports. Since 2019, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has significantly stepped up its crackdown on dissents in Hong Kong when massive pro-democracy protests triggered violent clashes between activists and police. To make it worse, the national security law introduced by the authorities in 2020 restricts dissident media.

It is reported that Patten is frightened by Xi Jinping’s attitude and approach towards Hong Kong, as he is taking measures that are detrimental to China’s medium and long-term interests. The power of the CCP is rapidly dissipating, not only in managing the economy but also in managing the CCP’s soft power around the world. At the same time, Patten warned that the CCP would realize that attacking Taiwan was extremely dangerous.
