Australia: Solomon Islands security should not be met by Communist China

According to a report on June 17th, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong visited a riot-affected community in the Solomon Islands on Friday to highlight the capabilities of the Australian police. The region is concerned about the Pacific nation’s security protocol with Communist China.

Penny Wong held “constructive” talks with Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare, representing the new Australian government’s first visit to Honiara.

Penny Wong’s visit focused on education and medical assistance, as well as Australian police’s efforts to restore stability by working with vulnerable youth after deadly riots in November.

Penny Wong told reporters that Sogavare reassured the public that under the protocol with Chinese Communist Party, there will be no military bases in the Solomon Islands, and there will be no continued foreign military installations.

Australia, Japan, New Zealand and the United States have expressed concern about Communist China’s possible establishment of military facilities in the Pacific. Several island nations said the protocol would be discussed at the Pacific Islands Forum leaders meeting in Suva next month.
