U.S. Lawmakers Introduce Bill to Ban Oil Exports to China

On June 15, U.S. Senators Marco Rubio and Rick Scott introduced the China Oil Export Prohibition Act.

The bill would prohibit the exportation of oil and petroleum products from the United States to Communist China, and ensure that the U.S. does not unintentionally aid and support its primary adversary. The prohibited products include U.S. crude oil, refined oil, petroleum products, residual fuel oil, and more.

The bill’s ban does not apply to petroleum products trans-shipped to Communist China through the U.S., nor does it apply to natural gas and LNG products.

In response to the current rising oil prices across the U.S., the senators believe that the U.S. should not only increase oil production but also prohibit the exportation of oil to Communist China which its government is guilty of genocide.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, in the first quarter of 2022, the U.S. exported nearly 819 million barrels of oil and petroleum products, of which about 6.3 percent, equivalent to 52 million barrels, went to Communist China. In 2021, Communist China is the fourth largest export destination for U.S. oil, accounting for about 7%.
