Russian Soldier Who Killed Ukrainian Civilian Gets Life Sentenced

It was reported that on May 23, a Ukrainian district court sentenced a Russian soldier who deliberately shot Ukrainian civilians to a life sentence. The Ukrainian district court found that the 21-year-old Russian soldier Shishimarin killed the 62-year-old Ukrainian civilian Shelipov in the village of Chupakhivka on 28 February.

After investigation, the defendant fired several shots in the head of the victim acting on orders by the Russian Authorities. To this end, Judge Serhiy Agafonov imposed the life sentence, and given that the crime committed is a crime against peace, security, and humanity, the court did not see the possibility of imposing a shorter sentence of imprisonment.

Last week, Shishimarin admitted the crime in court and asked forgiveness of the man’s widow. In this regard, Ellis, Executive Director of the International Bar Association (IBA), believes that this is a sentence that draws the bottom line, and the result is not surprising. More importantly, the case sets the standard for sentencing in future war crimes cases.
