U.S. President Biden signs Lend-Lease Act to speed up arms supply to Ukraine

U.S. President Biden officially signed the Ukrainian version of the Lend-Lease Bill passed earlier by Congress at the White House on May 9, which allows the United States to directly assist the Ukrainian government and troops in accelerating the supply of armaments there.

Biden said that to seek congressional support and pass a new round of $33 billion in aid to Ukraine as soon as possible. He is ready to make political concessions so that Congress can separate this appropriation application from the funds for responding to the epidemic and strive to pass the aid program in support of Ukraine first.

The Lend-Lease Act originated during World War II. To help European countries fight against German Hitler’s aggression, the United States specially legislated to avoid cumbersome administrative procedures and allow strategic materials to reach the front line quickly and effectively. The Lend-Lease Act had played an essential role in defeating Hitler. The Ukrainian version of the Lend-Lease Act and funding Ukraine will also help Poland and other Eastern European countries affected by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
