Austrian Chancellor Is Pessimistic About Resolving Russia-Ukraine Conflict; Putin Has Entered “War Logic”

After talking with Russian President Vladimir Putin on the 11th, Austrian Prime Minister Karl Nehammer said that Putin’s “war logic” was pessimistic, and he described the process of talks with Putin as very difficult. “We should not have any illusions; Putin has entered his own war logic, and he is taking corresponding military actions to successfully take Ukraine,” Nehammer said.

Nehammer is the first EU leader to meet Putin face-to-face since the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war. Austria is not a member of NATO and has maintained fairly friendly diplomatic relations with Russia for decades, so Austria has in the past, been a mediator of differences between Russia and Europe’s interests.Nehammer said he felt there was little Russian interest in the proposal for a direct meeting with Ukrainian President Zelensky.
