The Court of Justice of the European Union rejected an appeal filed by Russian television station RT on Wednesday, according to a report on July 29th. The station argued that the EU should lift the ban due to the freedom of speech and press freedom. Russia is unhappy with the rejection of the appeal and has threatened to restrict Western media.
Since March, the EU has imposed bans on Russia’s two largest state-funded broadcasters, Russia Today TV’s RT and Sputnik. In late May, the EU added the Russian channel RTR Planeta, Russia 24 and TV Centre to its blacklist of Russian media.
The U.S. Congress also began restricting Russian media in March, leading to the global blocking of its RT and Sputnik tubing channels. Most Western countries have also permanently blocked RT and Sputnik at this time.
The Kremlin accused the court of politicizing the issue and threatened to impose similar restrictions on Western media operating in Russia. EU officials say these Russian media outlets are spreading unjust and false information in their coverage of the war in Ukraine.
